Gas Leak Detection – Scotland
We received a request from one of the refrigeration companies who regularly spec and install our gas leak detection systems to visit a site with them where they were upgrading the plant equipment. This was a very large project for Macduff’s Shellfish, based in Scotland, and we were asked to conduct a site survey and check what the requirements would be to provide a full and compliant detection system to monitor and detect any leaks from the ammonia equipment.
It was decided that a 40-point TQ8000 control panel would be best suited to this application with a variety of TQ122 NH3 ATEX rated sensors ranging from 0-100ppm up to our 0-30,000ppm flammable sensors. Each pack had a 0-5000ppm sensor positioned where it would be best suited to detect a leak and had 2 user defined alarm levels set for detection.
The areas around the plantroom were also provided with the added protection of a traffic light sounder beacon. These beacons displayed a green light to indicate that the system was functioning correctly and there was no danger of any leaks being detected. On indication of a leak the TQ8000 control panel would then provide a signal to the T/L beacon and indicate either a stage 1 or stage 2 alarm dependant on the level of gas detected. The colour of the beacon would then change and also sound an alarm to alert all persons in proximity of the plant.
We also placed sounders within the factory. This would allow us be able to warn any employees and visitors to site of a leak, in situations where they didn’t have sight of a beacon. All these sounders and beacons were operated and controlled through the TQ8000 utilising the 16 configurable relays within the control panel.

Latest TQ8000 Touch Control Panel
As the site continued to grow and expand so did the need for extra leak detection protection on site. Another 48-point system was installed, this time it was one of our latest TQ8000 Touch control panels. These systems have a 7” touch screen display, the alarm and fault status of each channel is displayed on the front panel display. It also has 3 user defined alarm thresholds on each channel, data logging and can monitor a wide range of gases with both 4-20mA and 3 wire catalytic sensors.
Operator interface controls are available for the adjustment of alarm set points, channel inhibit, relays, calibration span and zero. These controls are customer configurable, and password protected.
