Luton Airport Refrigerant Leak Detection

TQ Environmental were tasked with the supply of a refrigerant leak detection system to cover an area at Luton Airport that would have a potential level of danger to passengers should there be a refrigerant leak. It was, therefore, decided that our leak detection system was to be used to provide an early warning system, which protects the lives of those close to the area and ensures that the system is functioning correctly and efficiently and is fully compliant with EN378.

A control panel was needed that not only provided a display of where each sensor was located and what the current PPM level was, but it also needed to link back to a central control panel where it could be monitored 24/7. The best option for this application was our TQ8000 Touch, which is capable of continuously monitoring up to 48 sensors and be connected via a network gateway to a 3rd party BMS system.

The panel had a range of sensors connected to it covering the possibility of refrigerant leaks. The GD231 infra-red sensor with a typical range of 0-2000ppm was used, this sensor also has a LED display and so can be used as a stand-alone sensor too, this display gives an indication of the level of leak once it is detected. Capable of operating between -20 and up to + 50 degrees and comes in a 43 IP rated enclosure.

Why Use GD131

The GD131 was specifically chosen for areas requiring a more robust sensor. Utilising the same Infra-red technology, these sensors, housed in an IP65 rated enclosure, are waterproof, ensuring their adaptability to various environments. They operate within the same temperature range as the GD231, but can also be set to operate down to -30 degrees, showcasing their versatility. Both these sensors can monitor a wide range of CFC, HCFC and HFC gases, generating a signal proportional to the concentration of the refrigerant detected, and offering an output in the form of an industry standard 4-20mA for monitoring or as a preset alarm relay contact to operate local warning or control devices.

The refrigeration contractor has now installed the system, which was calibrated and commissioned by the trained TQ Environmental engineers. This system is now fully operational and is performing to help save lives, protect the environment, and cut down on manual hours spent leak detecting while operating at reduced capacity.
